    WELCOME TO MY WORLD

I'm an award-winning poet, writer, blogger, and journalist, and my fiction and nonfiction have appeared in dozens of regional and national publications. But I'm a storyteller at heart—whether it's traditional mysteries, private eyes, literary, historical, suspense, or a touch of the supernatural. I enjoy creating settings filled with characters who see the world from varying viewpoints, and I hope my stories will thrill and move you.

Take a look around, check out the book links, FAQ, latest news, and book extras. Hop on over to my author blog and sign up for the newsletter with fun tidbits and occasional updates about the latest releases.

You can also join me on Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, Pinterest, and various other social platforms via the links at the top or on the "Meet BV/About" page.

I hope you enjoy reading my books and will consider leaving a review on your favorite online hangouts. I look forward to having you along with me on this amazing writing journey!

    Bio Bits

I grew up in East Tennessee, where I began my career as a penniless poet after winning a poetry contest at age 10 with the appropriately titled work, “Lost.” Unfortunately, although poetry can be a passionate lover, it rarely makes a good spouse. After more poems and the diversion of two college music degrees, I found my way into a slightly more lucrative writing career (you think penniless poets have problems - try being a musician!), with feature articles for newspapers and magazines.

Some of the career hats I've tried on include maid, super-speedy typist, classical musician, radio announcer, being in TV commercials (for all of one day), research assistant, television features writer, and working for the Discovery Channel. Now a full-time freelance writer, I've penned articles for various local and national publications and won awards for my published stories and poems.

Whither mysteries, then? Blame it on a librarian mother who got me addicted to the genre. Not to mention all the other relatives who kept mystery authors reasonably well-fed with frequent purchases of their books, helping me realize mysteries can touch the lives of a broad cross-section of readers. It’s also appealing that mysteries give writers an unusual opportunity to create characters and watch them grow through the years as they become part of the family.

When time permits, I enjoy flying over Northern Virginia, the Chesapeake, and the Eastern Shore with my husband in a little putt-putt Cessna. No ticket required.

    QUIRKY BV FACTS

    • One of my grandfathers was a drummer for a Dixieland Band. He played with such luminaries as Artie Shaw.

    • My first piano recital piece (at the ripe old age of 6) was, fittingly, “Traffic Cop.”

    • I once changed clothes in the middle of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. I was part of the choral group America’s Youth In Concert, and, with no place to change into uniforms at the cathedral, the girls made a circle and took turns changing inside the circle (teenagers, you know; they’ll do anything).

    • I sang in Carnegie Hall. It was part of that same choral group above, but hey - it’s still Carnegie Hall!

    • I was an announcer for a classical music radio station for years. My favorite bloopers include saying “compact dick” instead of “compact disc,” and “Martin Luther King,” instead of “Martin Luther” (referring to Mendelssohn’s Reformation Symphony).

    • I once worked for an Arabic-language television news magazine, writing features and human-interest scripts, despite not knowing a word of Arabic. Still don't!

    • I participated in a backyard astronomy session at David Levy’s home in Arizona. (Remember Comet Shoemaker-Levy?) On that same tour, I got a chance to meet Carolyn Shoemaker, too.

    • I get to putt around with my pilot-husband in a little Cessna 172 traveling throughout the mid-Atlantic and East Coast. So far, we've been to sites in Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, Maryland, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Florida (and flown over others), with more to come. It’s a wonderful view from up there, but also a little sad at times to see the layer of brown pollution hanging over the ground. The airport at Morgantown, West Virginia, has a wonderful little Mediterranean Restaurant, by the way. Wonderful grape leaves!
